In the realm of manufacturing, additive processes, also known as 3D printing, are relatively new. Additive manufacturing technology constructs a desired three-dimensional geometry by additively building it layer upon layer. This technology differs completely from traditional manufacturing methods that manufacture destructively by taking away material until a final geometry is realized. The materials that are currently capable of being utilized in 3D printers are extensive, ranging from common household plastics to aerospace-grade metals such as aluminum and titanium. Current terrestrial-based development has opened the door to a paradigm shift in the way logistics architectures are conceived on the ground. 3D printing has also laid the foundation for revolutionizing the exploration of space and the way in which space missions are designed.
