Those synthetic elements with atomic numbers higher than that of uranium (atomic number 92). They are the members of the actinide series, from neptunium (atomic number 93) through lawrencium (atomic number 103), and the transactinide elements (with atomic numbers higher than 103). Of these elements, plutonium, an explosive ingredient in nuclear weapons and a fuel for nuclear power because it is fissionable, has been prepared on the largest (ton) scale, while some of the others have been produced in kilograms (neptunium, americium, curium) and in much smaller quantities (berkelium, californium, and einsteinium).
