Active Traffic Management (ATM) is the latest in a long line of U.S. federal government initiatives to improve the productivity and efficiency of the transportation system. Where ATM differs from previous initiatives is in the use of advanced technologies and improved intelligence in road, vehicle, and traffic management centers to actively adjust traffic controls on a real-time basis to respond to and anticipate special events, incidents, and weather. The latest evolution of ATM combines ATM and Transportation Demand Management (TDM) into a comprehensive program of Active Transportation and Demand Management (ATDM) that manages both the demand and supply sides of the transportation problem. The use of road pricing and sophisticated travel information systems in ATDM greatly expands the ability of public agencies to deliver a dependable, efficient, and reliable transportation system that cost-effectively moves people and goods.
