An order of cnidarians (subclass Hexacorallia) commonly known as black, or thorny, corals. Antipatharians have been identified in all of the world's oceans at depths of 4 to 8600 m (13 to 28,200 ft), but most known species live between 100 and 1000 m (330 and 3300 ft). Shallow-water species of Antipatharia have a tropical or subtropical distribution and tend to be found in turbid water or otherwise dark areas, for example, in caves and under overhangs. Deep-sea species [at depths of more than 200 m (660 ft)] are distributed across all latitudes. See also: Cnidaria; Deep-sea fauna; Hexacorallia
