High-strength steel refers to a family of constructional steels with minimum yield strengths of 460 MPa. The yield strength is the stress required to produce a specified inelastic strain (permanent deformation). Compared to conventional mild (<0.3% carbon) steels with yield strengths in the range of 235–355 MPa, high-strength steels are higher in strength and lighter in weight. Moreover, an optimized balance of strength, weldability, ductility, toughness, corrosion resistance, and formability can guarantee the performance of high-strength steel, which is also known as high-performance steel.
