The use of shape memory alloys (SMAs) in seismic applications has been explored in structural systems such as steel braces, bridge restrainers, beam-column connections, isolation devices, and retrofitting systems. While SMAs have been shown to enhance a structure's seismic performance, their applications in civil structures are primarily focused on passive systems. Compared with active systems, passive systems have fixed properties and do not require external energy in order to function. They are therefore usually more economical, predictable, and energy efficient.
