This article describes the ways that software-defined radio (SDR) has been practically applied. The aim of an SDR, like that of any radio, is to transmit and receive data or voice-based information by means of wireless communication. In addition, an SDR must include unavoidable analog components, such as an antenna to allow radio-frequency coupling with free space and radio-frequency amplifiers for signal strengthening. Such an SDR may be simply defined as shown in Fig. 1.
