One of the current burdens placing significant strain on the health care system in the United States, as well as worldwide, is the obesity epidemic. Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI, units kg/m2) greater than 30. Those who are considered overweight have a BMI between 25 and 30, with morbid obesity considered at a BMI greater than 40. Current estimates for the prevalence of overweight and obese patients are as high as two-thirds of the United States population and up to 1.7 billion people worldwide. The preponderance of the obese population has been steadily rising in the United States since 1980 (Fig. 1), nearly doubling to 30% of the population. According to current projections, 44% of the worldwide population will fall into the category of obese or overweight by the year 2020.
