An electrochemical device that stores chemical energy which can be converted into electrical energy, thereby providing a direct-current voltage source. Although the term “battery” is properly applied to a group of two or more electrochemical cells connected together electrically, both single-cell and multicell devices are called batteries (Fig. 1). An extremely reliable source of power, batteries appear in a vast number and range of applications in the modern world, for instance in mobile telecommunications devices, portable computers, vehicles, and electronics.
