Bonobos (Pan paniscus) are among the closest living relatives of the human species. Along with chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), bonobos shared a common ancestor with human beings approximately 6 million years ago (MYA). The two species of Pan shared a much more recent common ancestor approximately 2 MYA (Fig. 1). The first draft version of the Pan troglodytes genome was published in 2005, and the first bonobo genome was published in 2012.
