A bridge consisting of a number of inclined cables connected directly to towers (pylons) to support girders (deck structures); it is a modern bridge type. The stay cables provide intermediate supports for the girders so that they can span a long distance. The cables are under tension, and the towers and girders are predominantly under compression. Cable-stayed bridges economically fill the span gaps between the upper ranges of arch and truss bridges and the lower range of suspension bridges. They are practical for construction without temporary falsework (temporary shoring towers and supports) and can span up to 1110 m (3600 ft).
