Tens of thousands of people are affected daily by the hardships of gastrointestinal (GI) cancer. Doctors and biomedical engineers have been collaborating for years to improve the method of distribution, identification, and treatment of cancer in the GI tract. Recent advancements in miniaturization technology capabilities and increased efficiency in batteries, actuators, and electronics have brought researchers closer to clinical implementations of novel designs that address the complications of conventional colonoscopies. Limited access to the GI tract using flexible endoscopes and restricted maneuverability of the instrument within the colon pose the main problem, resulting in patient reluctance to undergo endoscopy.
