Diesel fuel is used to run vehicles and machinery in a variety of applications, including transportation, construction, and portable electricity generation. Pollutants from diesel exhaust—in particular, nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2), commonly referred to as “NOx,” and particulate matter (PM) in the form of soot—represent a significant fraction of the totals emitted in urban areas. Until the 1990s, emissions from diesel engines were not restricted to the same extent as those from gasoline vehicles. However, during the past 15 years, there has been an aggressive policy to reduce the emissions of NOx and PM from diesel exhaust for heavy-duty diesel vehicles (Fig. 1) and nonroad diesel engines (see table). A set of photochemically catalyzed reactions involving NOx and hydrocarbons that occur in the atmosphere produces ground-level ozone, a respiratory irritant and a constituent of smog. In addition, particulate soot contains known carcinogens. Thus, the elimination of NOx and PM is essential for improving the air quality of major urban areas.
