A highly diversified division of the plant kingdom comprising green algae that have chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b as the predominating pigments; also known as Chlorophyta or Chlorophycophyta. Members of the division Chlorophycota (also referred to as Chlorophyta or Chlorophycophyta) are known commonly as chlorophytes and they contain chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b. They constitute one of the two divisions of green algae, with the other being the division Charophyta. They also exclude members of the class Euglenophyceae, which are free-swimming flagellates that were considered in past classifications to be algal forms. In all other respects, the chlorophytes are so different from the charophytes as to suggest a separate origin of their photosynthetic pigments. The exact classification often varies, with taxonomists recognizing a number of classes, including Chlorophyceae, Pedinophyceae, Prasinophyceae, Trebouxiophyceae and Ulvophyceae.
