A 74-kilodalton (kDa) hydrophobic glycoprotein that plays a central role in human high-density lipoprotein (HDL) metabolism and reverse cholesterol transport. Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) mediates the exchange of neutral lipid (both heteroexchange, which is the net transfer of cholesteryl ester between lipoproteins in exchange for triglyceride and homoexchange, which is the bidirectional transfer of the same lipid) between apolipoprotein (apo) A-I- and apoB-containing lipoproteins (Fig. 1).
