Mechanical systems (such as levers, clockwork mechanisms, and pendulums) are the stuff of classical physics. In recent times, their attractiveness has been eclipsed by the advent of sophisticated, fast, and accurate electromagnetic circuits. But very recently, the mechanical sphere has reemerged into the limelight, mainly as a result of the advent of scanned probe microscopies. Scanning techniques have benefited from electromagnetic readout, either optically or using a microwave resonator. If the coupling between electromechanical and electromagnetic systems is made sufficiently strong, this allows the manipulation and detection of mechanical motion at the quantum level in a device that is enormous compared with the atomic scale at which we are accustomed to observing quantum behavior. Strong coupling has recently been achieved between two quite different types of resonator.
