A class of hexapod arthropods, often referred to as springtails, previously classified with the insects, but now generally considered to belong to a distinct taxon of uncertain relationship. The Collembola constitute one of the most widespread and abundant groups of terrestrial arthropods. They are found everywhere, from the utmost reaches of the Antarctic and Arctic to the equator and in all habitats, except the open oceans and deep areas of large lakes. See also: Arthropoda; Insecta
