The use of both crewed and remotely operated vehicles has permitted the exploration of new and previously unknown ecosystems in the deep sea. Exceptional findings include the rich and specialized faunas associated with hydrothermal vents and cold methane seeps, as well as the fauna associated with sunken whale carcasses. Perhaps the most thrilling discoveries have been those of the hydrothermal vents, first investigated in the late 1970s and studied intensely since then. The recent collection of several species of hitherto unknown swimming annelid worms constitute an especially noteworthy deep-sea discovery.
