Mass spectrometry (MS) is undergoing significant expansions in its capabilities, in which advances in instrumentation are enabling new applications. In the last 50 years, MS has developed from a method used to measure the masses and abundances of nuclides to a widely used tool for organic structural analysis, environmental monitoring, and metabolite profiling, as well as the principal experimental basis for proteomics. These developments followed directly from advances in mass analyzers, combinations with MS and separation methods, and especially from the invention of new ionization methods. The development of proteomics is based on widely celebrated advances in ionization [electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI)] techniques and on the less noticed development of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS).
