One of the most important technologies in the attempt to reduce particulate matter (PM) emissions is the diesel particulate filter, or DPF. To understand the performance capabilities of diesel particulate filters, it is necessary to be familiar with the definition and composition of diesel particulates. Diesel particulate matter is composed of three main fractions: elemental carbon and ash (solid), organic fraction (liquid), and sulfate particulates (liquid).
