An order of sharks (bramble sharks) represented by one family, one genus and two species. Members of the family Echinorhinidae in the order Echinorhiniformes differ from all other sharks in possessing the following combination of characteristics: body and fins are covered with thornlike denticles; two small spineless dorsal fins are placed posteriorly to the pelvic fin origin; anal fin is absent; minute spiracles are placed well behind the eyes; teeth are similar in both jaws; and caudal fin lacks a subterminal notch.
