Electrospinning is a simple technique that uses a high voltage to draw ultrathin fibers from a polymer solution or melt. The fibers typically have diameters on the scale of several hundred nanometers. Therefore, they are widely known as nanofibers. Because of their small sizes, nanofibers have extremely high surface area–to-volume ratios, and nanofiber-based mats are highly porous, with excellent interconnectivity between the pores. These features, together with the feasibility of alignment, make electrospun nanofibers particularly attractive for applications such as neuroregeneration, wound closure, and filtration.
