An order of teleost fishes containing the pikes, pickerels and mudminnows; also known as Haplomi and Esocae. The actinopterygian (ray-finned) fishes of the small order Esociformes, comprising 2 families (Esocidae and Umbridae) and 10–14 species, can be identified by a combination of the following characteristics: dorsal and anal fins are posteriorly placed on a rather slender body; maxillae are in the gape of the mouth and toothless; small uniform teeth are on the tongue and basibranchial elements; and there are no adipose fin, breeding tubercles, pyloric ceca, or mesocoracoid bone.
