Ethical leadership deals with the virtuousness of leaders and the nature of their behavior. The twenty-first century began with a series of high-profile ethical scandals, including the bankruptcies of an energy company (Enron) and a telecommunications giant (WorldCom), and the global financial collapse of 2007. Many of the leaders of the companies involved in the ensuing financial turmoil were convicted on criminal charges. In addition, despotic and corrupt heads of state lead many nations. Unethical leaders abound, so it is little wonder that the past decade has led to increased interest in ethical leadership on the part of scholars.
