A large and important Australian forest tree, including about 700 species in the family Myrtaceae. Eucalyptus trees (eucalypts; genus Eucalyptus) occur throughout Australia and are particularly prevalent in eastern areas of the continent. However, eucalypts are absent from Australia's driest regions. Only two species of Eucalyptus occur naturally outside Australia, being found on New Guinea and Indonesia. In general, eucalypts grow from sea level to the tree line (the elevation limit for arboreal growth; in this case, 6600 ft or 2000 m). See also: Australia; Forest and forestry; Myrtales; Tree
