A range of effects, including physical, mental, behavioral, and/or learning disabilities, that can occur in the offspring of women who consume alcoholic beverages during pregnancy. The term fetal alcohol spectrum disorder encompasses several conditions. These conditions constitute a spectrum of changes that can occur in an individual with prenatal alcohol exposure. Fetal alcohol syndrome is the most severe type of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, and is characterized by abnormal facial features (see illustration) and growth and central nervous system problems.
