Two basic necessities—logs and production means—are essential to produce wood products. However, minimization of the environmental loads for a specific wood product is also important. In addition, the costs, both monetary and environmental, of today's wood production methods are higher than necessary. In fact, approximately 10% of the raw materials and production resources are lost as waste. The cost of the waste alone, which is added to the price paid by today's world wood consumers, equals about 10 billion euros (%) per year [about $14 billion (U.S. dollars) per year].
