With increasing global emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions and concern over potentially unstable petroleum supplies, automotive manufacturers have been actively researching and developing powertrains to address these concerns. Many believe that fuel cells will be the dominant powertrain, as they promise higher efficiency, zero emissions, and fuel feedstock flexibility. Small fleets have been demonstrated and are in use worldwide. Predictions for full commercialization range from the near future to 2020 and beyond. Today's fuel-cell vehicles now are approaching the performance and packaging of production vehicles with approximately twice the fuel economy. Remaining challenges include cost, durability, fuel storage, and fuel infrastructure.
