It has been recognized for some time that the humble house mouse is an extremely valuable research tool for human medicine. Despite the outward differences in appearance, mice and humans are actually quite closely related with respect to general body plan and physiology, and at the genetic level. Mice and humans share approximately 99% of their genes. That is, if one takes any human gene, there is 99% likelihood that there will be a mouse correlate. Given the high degree of genetic conservation between mice and humans, as well as many ideal laboratory characteristics (such as inexpensive husbandry and rapid life cycle) of mice, it is not surprising that the mouse has come to the forefront of modern medical science as a model for understanding the individual functions of human genes and the genetic disorders that afflict humans.
