A member of a family of diterpenoid carboxylic acids that are notable for being plant hormones. Gibberellins are diterpenoid carboxylic acids. Most of them possess ent-gibberellane or ent-20-norgibberellane carbon (C) skeletons. Gibberellins occur in some fungal and bacterial species and in all higher plants, in which certain members function as growth regulators (hormones). There are at least 136 fully characterized gibberellins that have been isolated from all sources. These are named gibberellin A1…136 in order of discovery, commonly abbreviated GA1, GA2, and so on, with GA used as a general abbreviation for the whole class.
