Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is a very rare and highly lethal respiratory illness. It was first reported in the United States during the spring of 1993. The most recent outbreak occurred among people visiting California's Yosemite National Park in June 2012. There were 10 confirmed cases, and the National Park Service initiated a public health campaign to heighten public awareness, detection, and prevention of the disease.
