The Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago, Illinois, is the premier source of hard x-ray radiation in the United States. Along with its sister facilities, the ESRF (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) in France and the Spring-8 (Super Photon Ring 8-GeV) in Japan, it is a third-generation photon source providing hard x-ray radiation (roughly at energies from 3 to 300 keV) of unprecedented brilliance and energy range. Researchers apply these x-ray beams to probe the structure and composition of matter in a wide variety of disciplines: materials science; biological science; environmental science; chemistry; geoscience; agricultural science; and atomic, molecular, and optical physics.
