Over the last decade, high-power diode lasers have experienced significant performance and reliability improvements, creating new opportunities in various fields of science and technology. Today, high-power, broad-area diode laser chips and bars are well-established laser sources for a variety of applications, including telecommunications, materials processing, medical applications, and solid-state laser pumping. These compact lasers can provide high optical power, high efficiency, and long lifetime at low cost. These improvements have been made possible by optimal design, improved epitaxial growth, and mature fabrication techniques. This article highlights the recent progress in the design, fabrication, and performance of high-power diode laser chips and bars.
