An important cell signaling pathway mediating cell fate determination, tissue growth, and organ homeostasis. Tissue development and organ development rely on the accurate coordination of intrinsic and extrinsic cellular cues. Dynamic changes in these signals dictate the context in which cells proliferate, move, die, and are specified. The Hippo pathway has emerged as a central mediator of such decisions, functioning to integrate mechanical cues with growth factor signaling. Defective Hippo pathway activity is implicated in a variety of diseases, most notably cancer. Thus, considerable effort is being directed toward understanding the effects of inappropriate Hippo pathway activation and discerning how conventional signals become dysregulated.
