Hybrid electric and universally electric concepts, whose adoption is supported by the progress made in electrical component technology, will serve to enable solutions in meeting challenges related to reducing the environmental impact of transport aircraft. The prospects for these aircraft for future market segments need to be evaluated in terms of the available scope for fuel-burn reduction, energy consumption, efficiency, and operating economics. However, when assessing these concepts, many of the paradigms developed for aircraft powered by conventional fuel must be reconsidered, since the integration of such innovative electric propulsion systems perturbs the classical design, sizing, and performance of the aircraft.
