The hypersonic flight regime refers to a characterization of high-speed flight in the sensible atmosphere at which certain physics- and chemistry-based phenomena that are characteristic of atmospheric flight at velocities greater than five times the speed of sound (Mach 5) become increasingly important to the design and development of vehicles. Hypersonic ground testing is an evaluation method used with flight experimentation and computational tools to determine the efficacy of theoretical claims regarding hypersonic flight.
