Commercial production of manufactured artificial ice from water, or of dry ice from the solidification of carbon dioxide, by mechanical refrigeration. Of great economic importance was the manufacture of water ice for use in refrigeration units, fishing boats, fish- and meat-packing plants, and dairies. However, there was a sharp increase in the trend toward cubing, sizing, and packaging of ice. The domestic ice market practically vanished with development of the automatic household refrigerator.
