The coding, retrieval, and combination of information in perceptual recognition, learning, remembering, thinking, problem solving, and performance of sensory-motor acts. The brain is the most complex organ of the body, composed of a network of nerve cells (neurons) that process sensory impulses, store learned associations, and send commands to the body. Most of the information processing performed by the brain occurs in the cerebral cortex (Fig. 1).
