A shrub, Simmondsia chinensis, adapted to the arid portions of the southwestern United States and Mexico, and cultivated for a liquid wax that is extracted from its seed. Jojoba is a broadleaf evergreen shrub (see illustration) that is typically 1–3 m (3.3–10 ft) in height; in some cases, it can grow as tall as 6 m (20 ft). The jojoba plant is very tolerant of high temperatures and aridness. As such, it is being domesticated as a crop for hot, low-rainfall regions around the world. See also: Caryophyllales
