Jumbo Foam Glider
Publication year:2016
DOI:https://doi.org/10.1036/1097-8542.PR000019
This project takes you through the steps to build, launch, and fly a foam glider in sustained and controlled flight. Control in flight is achieved by modifying the wind the glider flies through with a large cardboard sheet (paddle). If this is your first time trying to fly a glider with a paddle, you may want to start with either the ultralight foam glider or tumblewing glider projects. Because of its increased size (95-cm wingspan) and weight, this jumbo glider is not very maneuverable, so is not as desirable to learn with. Pilots in training will likewise learn on a light and maneuverable airplane before transitioning to a larger, heavier airplane which can carry more load (such as many passengers and fuel to travel long distances).
