Any of the 53 tree and shrub species in the genus Juniperus occurring throughout the Northern Hemisphere. The common juniper (J. communis) is the most widespread of all conifers (ranging from subarctic tundra to semidesert and alpine mountains). African pencil cedar (J. procera) grows in East Africa and extends south of the Equator. In the United States, there are 13 native tree species, but many more species, varieties, and forms are planted for horticultural purposes.
