Fires have occurred on Earth for at least 400 million years, during which time the vegetation has been dominated by seed plants, initially conifers and more recently flowering plants. Fires were particularly prevalent during the Cretaceous Period, when major angiosperm groups were evolving, and it is believed that many fire-responsive traits in plants arose during that period. Although fires occur throughout the world, they are prevalent in Mediterranean-type environments, including Australia, California, the Mediterranean Basin, and South Africa.
