Fruit-bearing shrubs or small trees that are members of the genus Fortunella, included in the family of citrus fruits (family Rutaceae, order Sapindales). Kumquats are believed to have originated in China and the Malay Peninsula, but they are now widely cultivated in many citrus-growing areas of the world. The most common of the several species are F. margarita (Nagami kumquat) [see illustration], which has oval-shaped fruits, and F. japonica (Marumi kumquat), which has round fruits. Recent research has led many investigators to place the various species of Fortunella into one single species of Citrus (namely, C. japonica). See also: Fruit; Fruit, tree; Sapindales
