The mountain lion (Puma concolor) [Fig. 1] is a large wild cat that has many names, including puma and cougar. It is often referred to as “America's lion” and has the widest historical distribution of any large predator, extending across North America and South America from central Canada to Tierra del Fuego (the southernmost tip of South America). Like other large predators, mountain lions were persecuted by European colonialists. By the late 1800s in North America, they had been all but extirpated from the eastern two-thirds of their range.
