Cellular wireless data rates are fundamentally limited by available bandwidth. Noncellular systems are able to use higher frequencies, but are currently limited to line of sight. Improvements in algorithms and electronics are allowing systems to achieve performance that is coming closer to theoretical limits. However, demand for data over wireless networks is growing rapidly. Unlike wired and fiber networks, which can arbitrarily increase capacity by adding new cables, the shared aspect of the radio spectrum limits growth because of the potential for interference. Cellular architectures address this, but there is increasing complexity and cost of deploying and operating a network with increasingly smaller cells. Although hard to predict, it appears that the growth in demand for cellular wireless data may outpace the advances necessary to meet this need.
