The bacterial pathogen Listeria monocytogenes is a virulent microbe that is responsible for causing foodborne illness worldwide. Listeria monocytogenes is found in many locations in the environment, including soil and water, as well as in the intestinal tracts of many animals. This microbe is one of the most dangerous of the pathogens transmitted through food, causing severe disease in immune-compromised patients and in pregnant women. In these individuals, L. monocytogenes causes a variety of illnesses, including meningitis, meningoencephalitis, and spontaneous abortion of fetuses. In 2011, L. monocytogenes caused the deaths of 30 individuals in what is now recognized as the deadliest foodborne illness outbreak ever to occur in the United States.
