An order of free-swimming marine crustaceans. The Lophogastrida were formerly placed in the order Mysidacea, but have since been removed and are now regarded as a separate order, according mainly to molecular data. In contrast, other studies on morphology and anatomy show evidence for a Mysidacea (Lophogastrida plus Mysida) monophyly (a monophyletic group consists of a single taxon that is descendant from a common ancestor). Sometimes, morphological and molecular data are congruent, for example, data supporting the relationships among the Lophogastrida families. Whatever their exact taxonomical rank, the Lophogastrida and Mysida are generally claimed to be more or less closely related groups of shrimplike peracarids. See also: Crustacea; Mysida; Peracarida
