The tree Litchi chinensis, also called litchi, a member of the soapberry family (Sapindaceae). Lychee (see illustration) is a native of southern China, where it has been cultivated for more than 2000 years. It is now being grown successfully in India, South Africa, Hawaii, Burma (Myanmar), Madagascar, Brazil, Honduras, Japan, Australia, the West Indies, and the southern United States.
