The goal of metabolic engineering is to enable the host organism to be more productive in forming a desired metabolite compound. This objective is accomplished through employing a designed genetic modification strategy to enhance the performance of the host organism. As people seek efficient and environmentally benign routes for the production of useful products, the ability to manipulate organisms and take advantage of the reactions that they can catalyze provides an avenue for future gains toward these beneficial goals. Thus, this new way of engineering cells aids in the formation of novel and lower-cost products for industry, food, and medicine.
