National Academy of Sciences report on forensic science

On February 18, 2009, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) released the report Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward. The report was the culmination of more than two years of work by a committee selected by the NAS. More than 80 witnesses were called to testify during the deliberations of the committee. The final report contains 13 recommendations for actions that would, if implemented, greatly strengthen the practice and reliability of forensic science by setting new standards, providing increased funding for research and education, developing and transferring best practices, and by creating a new oversight body at the federal level. Since this report came out, the U.S. Congress has held hearings and legislation is being prepared. The reaction of the forensic science and justice communities has been unprecedented.
